I agree... and I disagree.

Although Adele's sound is more conventional or relatable, America, and
people in general, long for the unconventional just as much as they long for accessibility. American radio randomly selected to play "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine and it performed well. I believe if US stations shared equal air time with both Adele and Florence, both artists would, surprisingly (or unsurprisingly), be relatively close to balancing each other out in terms of success.
