She is still plenty controversial to the general public. People make fun of her all the time. The media is usually on her side, but it still doesn't sway public opinion. So, much like Madonna's case, in the grand scheme of things she isn't really overrated. She has the right pop formula for the times and she deserves her success.

Apparently Gaga is only overrated when she is doing well.

I remember when The Fame had yet to kick off, Gaga was underrated to everyone. Though she still got the praise she got today, in fact I think the praise was more generous back then.

Next thing you know she is listed among Michael Jackson and the Beatles as the most overrated acts of all time (this was from an article). So that would mean that Gaga most likely is overrated, but she at least has the chops to deserve that title. There is a reason why people, not just her fans, hype her up.

I do think what contributes most to her hype is that she is doing more than her peers. Pop music was seen as losing its touch due to untalented folk taking over, then Gaga came along doing 5x more than everybody else and she did it better. So in someway, Gaga is overrated, but in someways she is not. Hope that makes sense

I also agree that She is underrated.

She is certainly NOT underrated by her fans, but definitely by the general public. There are still so many people who think that she is "just another pop girl" and is just as talented (or talentless) as other manufactured pop acts. In the normal world, where people are unaware of every little thing that each singer does, she is underrated since they do not realize how big of a role she plays in everything that she does. Many people are surprized to hear that she writes, produces, etc. her songs and videos for some reason.

I find it interesting that artists such as Taylor Swift are never questioned when I mention that she also write all her songs. I just think there is something underrated about pop music in general in the public's eyes.
