All major label rap/hip hop music is commercial. So unless you only release mix tapes you have to be pop if you want to be successful.

It's been this way for awhile now. It's gotten worse in recent years, tho.

Technically speaking, Mary J Blige and Method Man would be the ones responsible for this, if we're talking rappers collaborating with female singers. Mariah would be the one responsible for rap & pop coming together. Mariah's **** was always on point, tho.

Mary wasn't a pop singer, though. I think that's the difference. I think he's referring to these rappers collaborating with these suburban pop girls to get a hit. "You're All I Need" was a "hood classic" and wasn't an attempt to get a quick hit.

Even Mariah had some street cred.
