None of those 3 are ballads. A recent ballad hit could be Need You Now.

A slower tempo does NOT equal a ballad. And most of these songs being mentioned have pretty strong beats anyways, while SLY has basically none.

But no, those two Bruno Mars songs are not ballads. I agree that that Need You Know song is a ballad, but I don't think that was number one on the Hot 100, right? So SLY IS the first #1 ballad since Take A Bow.

All her signatures songs are uptempo pop and she ruled radio with them.

A mess. Is he trying to put LTWYL, WYL, and other hip hop songs in the same category as Someone Like You? Those are overproduced songs where you can drown in those hot beats. Someone Like You is a simple piano-driven ballad for which its much harder to reach the top spot because it doesn't have a catchy beat.
