This really makes me sad...

Without meaning to sound apathetic towards the point of this experiment, haven't we already discussed this like a zillion times?

It's been discussed tons of times, yes, but not many of the experiments involve the younger audience - kids. Just seeing the black kids say the black doll are the ugly ones, and when the guy asks again which doll looks more like them and they point to the black doll is heart breaking.

While watching the some of the kids' faces during the experiment was heartbreaking, I have to say I have some reservations about how the experiment was done.

For one, the wording of the questions worries me. When you ask "Which one is the ugly one?," it linguistically presupposes that there is an ugly doll and that both the speaker and the listener know which one it is. How do we know, then, that the wording didn't pressure the kids into giving an answer reluctantly? In fact, how do we know that the kids came actually into the experiment thinking that white dolls are prettier or nicer than white ones (rather than the question itself making them believe so)?

On top of that, the race of the researcher could've affected the responses, too. If you have a white researcher asking you which doll is prettier, are the kids really ever going to say it's the white one?? Considering the power dynamics in the room, I'd say that the kids could've felt intimidated by the researcher and gave an answer that wouldn't necessarily offend him/her (though I have no way of saying whether or not this was the case here).

While I don't wanna discount the serious implications this study might have, I still think we should be wary of it. I'm sure that they explain better what their methodology was like on their journal article/book/whatever, but the issue with the social sciences is that they often deal with things that people feel very strongly about. So it's hard not to jump to conclusions when you see things like these.
