Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus to blame for abandoned dogs?

Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears To Blame for Spike in Abandoned Dogs?

Quote:
Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton all have sweet little dogs that they carry around with them everywhere.
While the dogs seen with A-list celebs are pampered and loved, the same can't be said for the dogs who are bought because someone thinks it will make them hip and fashionable to have a so-called handbag dog. In fact, there has been a massive spike in these dogs being abandoned. Are Miley, Britney and others to blame?
They're usually spotted under the arm or peeking out of the purse of a celebrity, not on the side of the road or at over-crowded shelters, but that's changing.
As the interest in handbag dogs dies down, the people who went out and bought the dogs to be more chic like their favorite celebrity are now dumping them. Why? Mainly because they cannot care for them or afford them.
The poor dogs are suffering because people, once again, want to emulate their favorite celebs. How disgusting.
While Miley Cyrus can't be blamed for other people's actions, it is actresses such as her who started the trend of handbag dogs.
These include Chihuahuas, pugs and other small breeds who can fit inside a purse or small carrier hence the name handbag dogs.
According to Clarissa Baldwin of The Dogs Trust, "People like to mimic the stars. The problem is that when the new dog owner gets their pet home they realise that actually it's not what they want after all. Perhaps they get bored, perhaps they don't see photographs of the celebrity they admired with their dog any more and, eventually, they end up getting rid of it."
Sadly, the dogs who are abandoned go from being a fashion accessory to a burden on shelters as they come in by the droves. Most of these sweet little pups are under two years old.
"Anyone can fall for a cute dog without thinking it through," said Baldwin. "Small dogs are always popular, but we just want people to think about the dog's needs and remember it is a dog and was given four feet for a reason."
With so many people wanting to copy their favorite celebrity, it's going to be hard to get people to pick a dog because they love it and not because it makes them look better.
"One of our staff members saw a lady in a pet shop choosing between two puppies, a husky and a Cavalier King Charles spaniel. She was making her choice by holding them up next to her in the mirror to see which dog suited her best. That's not the way to choose a dog," Baldwin explained.
How do you stop a celebrity trend once it has started?
Though you don't see as many celebs carrying dogs around anymore, it's still an issue. When teen stars like Miley Cyrus and Ashley Tisdale are seen carrying a dog, it's only time before many of their fans go out and do the same.
Sadly, it's the dogs who suffer at the end. And for what? Nothing is crueller than getting a dog as a fashion statement.
