How else do you explain Lopez and Ashanti taking off? Or Ja Rule becoming big, "pop" music being banished from top 40, etc and so forth.

It's more mediocre today when only dance pop songs rock the top 40 radio. oh the exception is Adele
During the first half of the 00's hip-hop/urban sounds took over BUT there were still a lot of REAL pop songs smashing.
I can't forget how amazing was 2002 with Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, P!nk, Vanessa Carlton, No Doubt, Linkin Park, Nelly, Ashanti, Creed, J-Lo, 3 Doors Down, Staind, The Calling, Puddle Of Mudd, Alicia Keys, etc having hits.
I don't think it's a matter of nostalgia, Pop radio had much more variety back then and different genres had fair airplay.
in the 90's pop radio almost completely ignored urban hits.
