The video for Avril Lavigne’s third Goodbye Lullaby single “Wish You Were Here” features the poor Canadian singer having a good cry in an empty room while lamenting, “Damn, damn, damn, what I’d do to have you here, here, here.” And what is it with this trend of the ladies of pop setting things on fire lately? First Skylar Grey immolates herself in the video for “Invisible,” and now Avril’s getting all pyro with a flower in her new clip. Watch the sob fest below.

Last night, before taking the stage in Turin, Italy, Avril tweeted, “My music video for ‘Wish You Were Here’ is coming out tomorrow (and the tears are real… no onions!!)”

There’s not really much to the Marc Webb-directed clip for the Max Martin/Shellback-co-produced “Wish You Were Here” — just Avril in a room, looking sad, lighting flora on fire and dunking her head underwater in a bathtub. But it all works given that the mournful song itself packs a strong emotional punch.

Punk rock pop princess Avril Lavigne cries her eyes out in her new video ‘Wish You Were Here,’ which is the latest single from ‘Goodbye Lullaby.’ It’s not a single, solitary tear, either. It’s a full on cry fest. Aw, Avril! We’re sorry you’re so sad. But we’ve been there and we know the feeling of missing the one you love.


The video is striking because it’s so spare — there are hardly any props, save for a flower and a tub. It allows the singer’s emotions to become the centerpiece, along with her voice. Avril is solo for the entire video, and of course, she is rocking her great hair and her flawless smoky eyes. She is in an abandoned industrial space, picking petals off a flower before setting it on fire. Jeez, Av, what did that flower do to you? Why did you set the poor thing ablaze?


Wearing just a black slip dress, the strap of which falls off, the singer demonstrates her unhappiness by crying. She is not in a happy place, both literally and figuratively, and black tears spill down her cheek, courtesy of all those coats of mascara. Before you shout “Someone, get the girl a tissue” at your screen, you see her practically sobbing. Is she missing her boyfriend, Brody Jenner? Her ex-husband, Deryck Whibley? Avril really emotes in the video and you want to give her a hug. It comes across as real display of emotion, courtesy of the pained look in her eyes.


Avril also ends up in a tub, submerged, and still not happy when she comes up for air.


It’s a somber video with Avril as the only star, in a sad, dark place. It certainly resonates, though! Even a perky pop star like Avril Lavigne immune to sadness that comes with separation.

Avril Lavinge has released the third single from her album Goodbye Lullaby and it’s one of our fave tracks! Wish You Were Here is a much better representation of the album than Lavigne’s first two singles and shows the maturity in songwriting that got Lavigne noticed by record labels when she entered the music biz at 17. The video shows a gorgeous Lavigne looking much older than we’re use to seeing her, which really just mean she looks her age.


Avril had been Twit Pic’ing images from the video shoot earlier this month with the caption “Behind this wall… Just balled my eyes out for 20 mins on set of my new video for Wish You Were Here. REAL, raw & exposed for all of you xo” Avril took to Twitter again today, asking fans what they think of Wish You Were Here, describing it as “simple but emotional. Raw and real. Stripped down.”

We've said this before and we'll say it again: We just don't understand these famous female pop stars pining for these loser boys who won't date them! HAVE YOU LOOKED IN THE MIRROR LATELY, AVRIL? Though in this case, we're pretty sure the idiot guy who "isn't there" for Avril is fictitious, since her main man Brody Jenner is definitely around and basically infatuated with his woman.
