It's hard to say. "TRL" viewers had some quirky tastes, especially since the audience was somewhat segmented. Random hard rock and rap videos could do really well, because the format rewarded fan loyalty over widespread or more general popularity. I'm sure Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber would have been smashes on the countdown, but someone like Ke$ha might not ever have even gotten a retired video. (Just look at Jessica Simpson for a great example of that.)

Anyway, what I really miss is seeing the effect that "TRL" could play in launching new artists. It lost its cultural cache over the years, but I think that in this day and age, when pop music is bigger than its been since the bubblegum era, the show could have become a popular tastemaker again.

I felt bad Jessica Simpson. She never had a retired video not even a number #1 video. Her sister Ashlee has better video runs than her on TRL.

Britney could have easily added 4-5 videos to her retired videos record (Womanizer, Circus, Hold It Against Me, Till The World Ends, maybe Piece of Me or If U Seek Amy), which would bring in a total of 20 retired videos.

Yeah, she'd still be the reigning Queen of TRL.

I think Gaga could have had 4 retired videos by now. Bad Romance, Paparazzi, Judas and You & I.

I really wonder sometimes, what TRL would do for digital sales of singles. I mean if your video is on the countdown, that would be prime promo guaranteed everyday on a good rated show.

In its last years, it started to take digital sales into account... probably because people stopped voting.

The limit for days on the countdown changed over time. Didn't they start to retired videos after 40 days?

I did LIKE TRL, but it was annoying when they only played 10 seconds of the videos, and the interviews were so corny. Even 106&Park, which is targeted to an urban crowd, started to see much better ratings for several years.
