LA Times: Joe Calderone is theatrics gone wrong
Quote:
Lady Gaga opened the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with a Broadway-inspired bit that wasn't the surprise producers tipped, as Gaga's career is littered with theatrics. More often than not, she's skirted the line between entertainment and controversy, but her cross-dressing bit as "Joe Calderone" was as tired and worn-out as the gratuitous guitar solos that clutter "You and I."
The only line Gaga crossed with her VMA opening was the one that separated excess from eye-rolling. Her Calderone character came off as little more than an extra from "The Outsiders," or maybe she was just referencing MTV's "Jersey Shore," strutting around the stage with cigarette in hand and a tension-less monologue that was about nothing more than Gaga herself. "What's with the hair? At first it was sexy and now I'm just confused," Gaga as Calderone said to forced laughter, likely echoing many-a-viewer's thoughts.
It got worse, though, as Gaga launched into "You and I," a bloated rock ballad that began with her at the piano and ended with her tripping around the stage as Queen's Brian May poured on out-of-date, second-rate solos. But hey, it went over well with some, as Dave Grohl, who knows a little something about arena-rock posing, stood and cheered at May's appearance.

The idea was good, just too extended.

I cringed the whole way through the opening speech tbh.
It's like the sole reason gaga crated Joe was so that she could kiss her own ass.

I just didn't like how the character became so overbearing as the night went on. When "Joe" basically made the entire Britney tribute about himself and barely let her get a word in edgewise? That was totally unnecessary.

She was a mess tonight, I think in a few years she'll look back and be really embaressed. I was disgusted.
You and I is one of my favourite songs though, so weird cuz I used to be dead set against it being released, so I did enjoy the singing part a bit.
But I think her giving Britney that award looking like that and acting like that & being so drunk was really dissapointing.

Exactly, but of course, the monster will say it was part of the act

Well, considering it's been planned for weeks...we've literally been teased about that moment when they would both be on stage together for weeks.

The only time it bothered me was during the Britney tribute. It was unecessary, and it kind of took the spotlight away from where it belonged.

I think Joe Calderone was a nice idea for the video but extending it beyond its intended use, it makes it seemed like she's trying for SNL instead.

People don't get it. Jo was not just meant to be one part, Jo Calderone was in attendance and Lady Gaga was not. Gaga was not playing a character, it was a whole different person, or so to speak. I know that thought is hard to understand, but that was Jo 100%.
The Britney thing was scripted and was nothing but a way to transition into Bey's performance where she announced her pregnancy.

this. Jo needed to simmer and settle. It doesn't matter if the awkwardness with Britney was planned, it felt TOO awkward, the audience was uncomfortable and very nervous. I'm sure they planned it to be funny, not uncomfy.
