In terms of prestige, obviously winning an Oscar is more significant than an MTV Moonman. But with regards to pop culture, are the VMAs the biggest night of the year? Many the biggest pop culture moments take place on this night every year. What happens at the Golden Globes? What happens at those ESPN awards? AMAs? Even the Oscar has only a couple moments I remember vividly that are itched in pop culture history.
Nobody watches VMAs for the awards, but for the moments. And let's face it--the VMAs are probably the most entertaining award shows, too.

HELL NO. The Grammys are still the most coveted and prestigious award in the music business.

In my opinion the VMAs and the BET Awards are the biggest joke in the world. The VMAs are more of a cultural event than a prestigious award show. The Grammys are the most important award show!

For pop culture - yes, and in some ways pop culture > prestige.

I'll repeat it just once more: Important in terms of POP CULTURE. I'm not talking about the awards themselves. I'm talking about the whole show, the spectacle, the outfits+performances+DRAMA, the moments that come out if it that are water-cooler topics for days.

No. Grammy's are far more important. But in terms of Pop Culture yes.

MTV is really popular..like really popular....so I think that make the show a big part of the industry....

What happen there is reported worldwide (the Kanye & Taylor incident, for example).
So much that it's hard to escape it contrarily to the other award show (except some important award at the Oscar & Grammy and even then it's not talked about as much as the scandalous VMA moments).
