Piracy is not a significant issue for films outside of markets like China where availability is limited, and regardless there is no comparison to the advantage that the recent explosion of the foreign markets has offered films of the past few years (nevermind the 3D boost).

It's hard to adjust numbers for overseas due to continually changing exchange rates, but this probably even minimizes how much more the LOTR films would have grossed under today's market conditions. ROTK's $743m international gross back in 2003 with today's ticket prices + insane expansion of foreign markets + 3D boost would likely translate into something like $1.1B overseas alone, in addition to a near $500m gross in America.
