When Britney Spears announced her Femme Fatale tour, there were a lot of skeptics. Can she still dance? Will she fit into her fishnets? Will she make it through a two-hour performance (let's be honest, she's not 18 anymore)? But when she flipped her wild blond hair out of her face and gave us all that signature smoldering stare, everyone in the audience was thinking the same thing: "It's Britney, bitch." We sat down with her makeup artist and hairstylist Marco Berardini to find out how he transformed America's pop princess for her 2011 tour.
What was the inspiration behind her look? "I really wanted to play up the idea of femme fatale. When I think of femme fatale, I think of European actresses like Brigitte Bardot. It's the epitome of a strong woman. I wanted to bring out that strength and sexiness for all the girls on tour."
Britney changes outfits all through the show. Does her makeup change too? "No, it was originally designed to be a little bit neutral so that it could work with anything. It's all about her body movement and the lighting. She really brings it to life."
And what about her hair? "We change her hair every show. I try to feel the vibe of the city we're in."
So what inspired the bouncy waves at her recent New York show? "I think New York brought out the Sarah Jessica Parker in all of us. I was sitting on a park bench and watching the girls walk by with their layered wavy hair and I just thought, that's so New York. It was also humid, so no one was going to try to straighten their hair that day."
What products last through a performance? "I was recently introduced to Inglot and I love it. I use their brown, pink, black, and gold shadows on her eyes for a sunset-inspired look. For her face, I use Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation, Evolution Man Concealer [from Berardini's new mens' line], and the Sculpting Kit from Make Up For Ever. I finish with M.A.C. lipstick in Myth."
How do you touch her up between sets? You've got to keep her hair and makeup in place. "I'm like the energizer bunny back there! I use Make Up For Ever HD MicroFinish powder to control shine on her face and touch up her hair with Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo. Hairspray tends to make the hair oilier, but the dry shampoo soaks up the moisture and adds volume."
And finally, what's it like to work with Britney? "She's probably one of the most beautiful palettes that I've ever worked on. She inspires me immensely."
