GAMESCOM WINNERS: BF3, Vita, EA, Sony & NONE for nintendo!
And the GAMESCOM 2011 Winners are
Quote:
Lay down some more tracks for the Battlefield 3 hype train: EA's upcoming first-person shooter extravaganza took home the top prize at Gamescom this year, winning the "Best of Gamescom" category in the trade show awards.
Sony made a lot of headline news this week, too, and they also have an award for "Best Hardware" to show for the PS Vita.
Even Microsoft's Kinect got some spotlight with their upcoming Sesame Street title. EA also had good showing in general for the awards list, taking home acclamations for FIFA 12 (it is Europe, after all), Star Wars: The Old Republic, and The Sims Social. Nintendo, on the other hand, had nothing much to show for their own systems, and notably went home with nothing -- but at least they have their E3 awards, right?
Here's the list of winners, from Gamescom:
Best of Gamescom: Battlefield 3, Electronic Arts
Best Hardware or Hardware Accessories: PlayStation Vita, Sony Computer Entertainment
Best Console Game: FIFA 12, Electronic Arts
Best Mobile Game: Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Sony Computer Entertainment
Best Online Game: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Electronic Arts
Best PC Game: Diablo III, Blizzard Entertainment
Best Browser Game: The Sims Social, Electronic Arts
Best Family Game: Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster, [BWarner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

Gamescom is a trade fair for video games held annually at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany. It is organised by the Bundesverband Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware (German Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software). It is used by many video game developers to show off their upcoming games and game-related hardware.
Gamescom is the world's largest games event with 254,000 visitors, more than 4,400 journalists and 505 exhibitors from 33 countries attending the show in its second year. It was first held from 19 to 23 August 2009. Gamescom 2011 will be held from 17 to 21 August 2011 at the same venue.

I just want to see new footage of Uncharted 3's single-player campaign, honestly that's all I'm here for.

Sony to stream Gamescom coverage via Facebook, phone, more
Out of the three big console manufacturers, Sony has the stage to itself at Gamescom and will broadcast its August 16 press conference live on Facebook, the PlayStation Blog site, a PlayStation mobile app, and the PlayStation 3.
The launch of Sony's shiny new PlayStation Vita draws nearer and nearer, and though the handheld won't debut outside of Japan until 2012, there are a number of titles that can be shown off.
Microsoft has opted for a hands-on Play Day instead, while Nintendo is once again conspicuous in its absence.
Vita versions of Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout, Killzone, and Resistance have already been confirmed, and no doubt Sony will want to reassure that its machine can both see off the Nintendo 3DS and survive alongside the iPhone.
PlayStation 3 owners can look forward to footage of Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3 for certain, and likely Child of Eden (Move edition), Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, Starhawk, and The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection.
If there's to be a PS3 price cut, Gamescom would make for a good venue to announce it.
More on The Last Guardian and various Final Fantasy projects would be most welcome, but it's probable that they will be saved for the Tokyo Game Show in September.
The conference starts at 7pm local time in Cologne, Germany, on Tuesday, August 16. That's 6pm BST (London), 1pm EDT (New York), and 10am PDT (Los Angeles).
Devoted fans on the other side of the world would need to stay up until the early hours (1am Singapore, 2am in Tokyo, 3am in Syndey), or simply watch the ensuing YouTube upload at a more reasonable hour.

Rumour: PS3 to Drop to £199.99 in UK
Going cheap?
That's cheap
It's Gamescom in Cologne at the moment and we've just heard an interesting rumour: Sony is about to announce a price drop for its PlayStation 3 console alongside a release date for PlayStation Vita.
UK trade retailer MCV posted and quickly rescinded a story claiming the PS3 is set to drop to £199.99 in the UK. Thankfully we grabbed a quick screengrab of the link, though the article itself has been removed from the system.
The console currently retails for around £239.99, so a £40 dip is a significant saving on the current price.
Does MCV know something we don't, and has unwittingly broken an embargo, or was it simply misinformation? We'll bring you the news as we get it.
