Do you know how much money producers make from single sales? Especially with Television promo? Think about it. MTV dishes out $500,000 AT LEAST for VMA performances, (split up between britney and her management) which they have to also get the rights to air that song...
Slave 4 U, at that time, probably sold for $50,000 - $75,000 for 6 weeks worth of licensing or more than likely, $150,000 for MTV to own the rights, permanently, to that variation of the audio and the footage. That's split up evenly between Britney, Pharrell and Chad Hugo.
Then everytime another network airs the performance (for like a "most memorable vma performances" countdown) they get royalties for thatt, even if it's just a few seconds worth of clips.
There's so much more that goes into it, but you get the gist. Right? Producers strike deals like this all the time and toss it up between labels.
