Charice: "I look up to Beyoncé & Lady GaGa"
Only a few years ago, the soft-spoken, gorgeous Filipina singer Charice appeared on Oprah, was dubbed "the most talented girl in the world" and found herself singing a duet with the legendary Celine Dion in concert. Now, the 19-year-old powerhouse is releasing a video for her latest single, "One Day," and gearing up to release another album in the fall.
Charice attended the Teen Choice Awards last night where she presented the ACUVUE Inspire Award to Demi Lovato alongside Teen Wolf hottie Tyler Posey. Prior to that, she hit the red carpet with her ACUVUE 1-day contest winner, Amen.
I had the chance to chat with Charice all about her new video, her love for Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, as well as her memorable, recurring role as Sunshine Corazón on Glee. She was just as humble and sweet as you'd expect! Read on!

Hi Charice! So a lot of people know your story, but I'm interested in knowing when YOU realized you had this amazing talent!?
Well, when I was a child, I originally wanted to be a dancer. But my mom used to be a vocalist in a band, so I would go with her to her gigs and I just got inspired. I didn't really know that I could sing. My mom left one time -- she was getting something from the market -- and I decided to sing karaoke. And when she found me, she was blown away, and that's how it all started.
Wow! So besides your mom, who else do you really look up to?
I would say I really do admire Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. I love Beyonce for her expression and style, and I love Lady Gaga for her personality. I think she is really cool.
Her fashion has evolved over the years.
Definitey. And is there anyone specifically that you look to for fashion advice?
I always look online, and I tend to look at Beyonce's style, but not exactly cause it's a little too sexy (laughs).
So let's talk about your new video! Tell me about it. How did the whole concept and contest come about?
The contest is about reaching out to all the teenagers and making their dreams come true. I'm very grateful they chose me to sort of be their mentor. It was fun. It was great to be able to reach out to them and help them reach their goals.
What was it like shooting the video? You did a lot of choreography. Were you nervous at all?
I was nervous, but it was definitely fun. All the teenagers were nice, and the director and the crew, everyone was so nice. It was a pretty day, you know? My choreographer, Gil Duldulao, is really great, and he did an amazing job with all the dance steps and teaching us. It was really fun.
And what did you think of the finished product?
I am very happy and I was actually like, not watching myself, but watching these three artists. One wants to be a dancer, another wants to be an artist, and the other a doctor. But when we were editing the video, I told them they are the winners cause I really want them to feel like their dreams are coming true. Watching the three of them in the video made me really happy.
The video has a very powerful theme. What do you say to those people who doubt you?
I think some people listen too much to the haters, you know? People who tell them they are not good enough. I think they have to believe in themselves. If they want to sing or dance or whatever, just keep practicing, and remember all the haters are saying bad stuff about you because they see something good in you that they don't have.
So true. Now I know you have worked with a ton of people, most recently Nick Jonas and Bruno Mars. What was it like working with them?
I feel very blessed. I am a big fan of Bruno Mars and Nick Jonas. I am really blessed to be able to work with them. I didn't really have a chance to meet Bruno Mars. I just heard his song, and we communicated mostly on the internet and emailing. I did meet Nick Jonas and he was really nice, but I am still hoping to meet Bruno Mars. And I would to thank them for trusting me to sing their songs.
Yeah, you guys should definitely sing together!
Hope so!
(laughs)
Who would be your dream duet? You've sung with Celine Dion and other amazing artists. Anyone else?
I mean, I haven't really met Lady Gaga or Beyoncé. I don't know if it's going to happen, but maybe one day.
Yes, one day! So who is big on your ipod rotation right now? What kind of music?
I actually love all random stuff: top 40, 80s, 90s. I am starting to write a song, so it helps when you listen to all genres.
Definitely. Now, I have to ask about Glee. What was your experience like on the show?
It was a dream come true! I was extremely nervous, but everybody was really sweet and gave me a warm welcome. It was truly amazing.
Who would you say you got the closest to on set?
They were all silly, but I think I am never going to forget Naya Rivera on set. She knows more personal stuff about me.
Aw, yeah. I love her! And what's it like watching yourself on those episodes?
I am still weird about seeing myself on TV! I don't know why, but it makes me so happy. And sometimes I think, "Wow I am on television, on Glee, the hottest show on earth and I am just blessed."
So what are you working on right now?
Actually it's my day off right now, but this week I am going to fly to Japan to promote my album. And I am going to be there for a few days, finish my album that is coming out this fall, and then I am going to do an Asian tour.
Great. Do we have a date yet?
We don't have a date yet, but it is definitely going to be the fall. It is going to come out in Asia first then here.
And you just filmed a movie, right?
I finished a movie with Kevin James and Salma Hayek that is coming out next year, it's called Here Comes the Boom.
So acting is something you definitely want to continue doing?
Yeah. I mean, I would love to try more comedies or maybe drama. Definitely.
Have you been star struck at all when meeting anyone?
I get star struck every time I meet someone I really know and watched as a kid (laughs). But I try not to show it because I don't want them to think I am crazy. Like they would say, "Hello" and I would say, "Hi," but inside I am like, "Oh my God!"
Haha! I think everyone gets like that at some point! So our website is all about passions and we call them "ologies." What are your top three ologies?
No. 3, my laptop is very important to me. No. 2, my cell phone because my family is in the Philippines and I have to talk to them. And No. 1, I can't live without my bed.
Awesome. Thanks so much, Charice!
Thank you!

I don't really like that song. She should've went to 'Before It Explodes' or 'Louder.'
I believe Louder has big chances of being a good hit.
