Chuck Lorre, the show's executive producer, said a while ago that he wanted to make sure Charlie Sheen could NEVER come back to the show, so killing him off is probably the easiest and most effective way of doing so (rather than like, saying he moved or whatever).

Honestly, it seems a bit extreme to me, considering that this is a sitcom. But I guess I also didn't have to work with Charlie Sheen on a daily basis, so maybe his anger and this plot device are justifiable...

When is the first episode airing? It will have massive ratings.

I haven't seen a character killed off because an actor was acting up in recent history. I think it happened on Good Times but that was a long time ago.
