Discussion: Should Gay Celebrities come out?

I was reading an article where an anyonymous journalist very rudely outed actress, Ellen Page.

With all the speculation around different celebrities (Kevin Spacey, Queen Latifah, Anderson Cooper) about their sexuality, its almost turned into a witch hunt to force any presumed gay celebrities out of the closet.

So I ask all of you, do gay and/or bi-sexual celebrities have an obligation to come out and declare their sexuality or is it a strictly private matter?

It's their choice. Nobody should have to be forced.

However, I think if they did it could provide a kind of sense of relief to teens who are closeted. Showing them that it gets better I guess. Giving them a figure to look up to. But again, it's their choice to come out or not. They need privacy too.

What does their sexuality have to do with what they do? It's not related to their job so the need to talk about it is non-existent.

What a disgusting, classless article. All these celebrity gossip bloggers who organize witch hunts to out celebrities must have had terrible and unfair outings themselves. I can't imagine what would make them think that it's their right to try and force this private personal matter into a public discussion in such a vicious way other than a twisted "It happened to me so it should happen to them" mentality.

That's one of the main reasons some people fell all gay celebrities should come out. It will hopefully shine a new light on homosexuality and inspire teenagers to be proud of their sexuality.

But does every gay celebrity have an allegiance to the LGBTQ community?

It would be nice to have some celebs come out and be like a voice per say. But they don't have to and they shouldn't be pressured to.

If they want to come out to the world thats there choice but it pisses me off when people like perez hilton out celebrities to the world when its none of there buisness (i.e. with Neil Patrick Harris)

Well of course it has nothing to do with their job, but I'm talking from a consciousness standpoint. Does a gay celebrity, with fame and power to possibly sway public opinion, owe it to the LGBTQ community to come out and positively represent them?

There are more out celebrities and more positive portrayals of gay characters in the media than ever before. What more do these bloggers want? It's not part of a celebrity's job description to talk about their personal life (as much as the public may expect it now) and I don't see why a closeted gay star who doesn't want their sexuality to define their career should be any different. I think it's much more important that those celebrities who have come out use the attention for good, rather than just fame-whoring (e.g. Lance Bass).

So no, no one should be obligated to come out or make a statement about their sexual preference.

Everyone should live their life freely.

they dont owe it to anyone to feel they have to come out. its up to them when they feel it is best and not up to fans or the media to decide.

the whole culture of "outing" people is horrible and can really affect some people
