He's known as blunt-speaking Yorkshireman who knows what he likes and he likes what he knows. But was anybody really expecting former cricketer Geoffrey Boycott to be a fan of Katy Perry?
Boycott, one of England's most successful opening batsmen, declared himself a fan whilst commentating during Monday's (1 August) Second Test between England and India at Trent Bridge on the BBC.
Renowned for his non-nonsense verdicts as much as he was for his prowess at the crease, Boycott declared: "I'm a good fan of pop music. I like that Katy Perry. She's a good singer. 'Firework' -- that was a good record, that. I like the pop music.
"She's nice, her. I like her singing as well -- she's good ... She's tops for me. She just has something about her voice. It's good, it's clear, it's strong."
Almost wistfully, Boycott added: "I don't think I'll ever meet her, she's American!"
Boycott is indeed a man of many surprises. Last year The Guardian reported that the 70-year-old recommended that footballer Michael Owen consider feng shui to improve his sporting form.
"She's nice, her. I like her singing as well -- she's good ... She's tops for me. She just has something about her voice. It's good, it's clear, it's strong."
