I'm not going to act like i was a huge fan, but her voice was incredible! from the few songs i've heard from her, she was super talented. maybe i'm naive but i really didnt see this coming, like at all. I've never followed her like that so i didnt know how bad her addiction really was, i wish i couldve appreciated her more because she was truly one of the few talented people we have left.
This is really sad, but it would be impossible to say that i am surprised. We all saw it coming.
Quote:
In an interview in 2008, her mother Janis said she would be unsurprised if her daughter died before her time.
She said: 'I've known for a long time that my daughter has problems. But seeing it on screen rammed it home. I realise my daughter could be dead within the year. We're watching her kill herself, slowly.
'I've already come to terms with her dead. I've steeled myself to ask her what ground she wants to be buried in, which cemetery. Because the drugs will get her if she stays on this road.
'I look at Heath Ledger and Britney. She's on their path. It's like watching a car crash - this person throwing all these gifts away.'
She had the accolades before, but she only had two albums. These same people calling her a legend now, weren't calling her a legend or icon when she was alive. Death can add a bit of mystique into someone's career, but it shouldn't elevate someone's status.
Why not? It's not elevating her existing acclaim, she already had it. It's highlighting her enormous talent and the mistakes she made like other great musicians before her.
Most people never questioned the quality of her music. On another note, death can be part of becoming an icon and nothing is wrong with that.
.
Someone's death signals the end of their book, if you will. When someone is alive, we can't fully gather what their impact on the world was, how much they achieved, etc. It's only after we're dead that others can see the whole picture. In Amy's book, it will go down as history as a tragic tale of one of the most talented singers of our generation never fully delivering on her talents. She's in a league with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, now. Artists that left an indelible mark on pop culture and society in general who were taken away from this green earth far too soon.
Just 20 years old here, so healthy-looking. One of her best songs; I remember laughing at this cheap video
I remember seeing her at the brits or something and thinking she was so talented and beautiful, she had like a zebra print dress on, then some time later not even recognizing. She should never have met the awful husband of hers, but some people just aren't destined to be on this earth for a long time. She gave us flawless music while she was here and we should just be grateful for that, I'm sure hugely talented people die without leaving any sign of it behind all the time. Wherever she is now she is free of drugs and hopefully at peace with herself and her life. In the 27 club she is in great company.

I've never seen someone call Winehouse a legend or icon. In between yesterday and today, her music and accomplishments didn't change. If she was no legend while alive, then she is no legend postmortem.
Thats a lie, her family, fans and basically the entire British public have been routing for her to overcome it, there were practically parties when she ditched her loser husband. The truth is she loved drugs more than anything else in life, she wanted to be high more than she wanted to sing and more than she wanted to live. It's horrifically sad but that is how these things go. Stupid boy.
I dont think any addict loves drugs stupid girl. Addicts are overtaken by the addiction and are compelled to use and reuse not because they love it more than their own lives and no, im sure her support system isnt what it shouldve been. Obviously it takes a large amount of self-control on her part but it was definitely evitable. Otherwise why try helping any drug addict if its "inevitable"
Back to Black is a 21st-century soul classic. Critics agree.
It is, but her debut album Frank should never be forgotten. If anything, it showcased her incredible voice even more than Back to Black. It's just arguably not as gritty.
And she's been an icon for years imo. She got world famous because of her incredible voice and music, and then her tragic story has kept her name on everyone's lips for the last few years.
This is really sad, but it would be impossible to say that i am surprised. We all saw it coming.
Now that is horrifically sad, how horrible for the people who loved and cared about her most, her family, to watch that happen, to try and help her and have her slip right back into it. Those are the people that need to feel the support right now. That excerpt is SO sad.
