Paul Evans Aidoo, the Western Region Minister, has ordered the arrest of homosexuals in his jurisdiction, My Joy Online (a Ghana news source) reported. The Bureau of National Investigations and all security agencies were given the task to find all GLBT individuals in the region. This command came after months of protests against homosexuality and politicians who believe in equal rights in the country.
Aidoo said once these individuals are arrested, they are to be taken to the courts to “test the strength” of the country’s law that frowns upon homosexuality. He continued, “…all efforts are being made to get rid of these people in the society.”
A recent media report in Ghana reported that there were about 8,000 gay and lesbian individuals in the Western and Central Regions in the country. In reaction, Aidoo said, “I don’t believe it; nobody believes it. We do not see them.”
Even though he does not believe that number of homosexuals exists in his region, he is ready to fight tooth and nail to arrest and prosecute every last one.
