About.com's Top Pop Albums of 2011 So Far...
Top 10 Best Albums So Far
Quote:
2011 has been a good year so far for the best in pop albums. They have ranged from collections by legendary performers like Paul Simon to the latest from current pop superstars Lady Gaga and Britney Spears.
10. Christina Perri - lovestrong
If you love "Jar Of Hearts," then Christina Perri delivered what you were waiting for. This is a perfect singer-songwriter album to curl up with, drink a glass or two of wine and alternately cry and smile with hope along with the warm, resonant voice that keeps you company.
9. The Strokes - Angles
The Strokes are best known as purveyors of updated garage rock. However, there is a strong dose of new wave pop influence here as well and garage rock is an important building block of classic power pop. Angles sounded almost like the Strokes were never gone even if it had been five years since their last studio album.
8. Selena Gomez and the Scene - When the Sun Goes Down
Selena Gomez continues her evolution as a pop performer on this third studio album. It is filled with pop gems that nominally revolve around events that happen in the evening and at night. However, even though that sounds a bit ominous, this album is anything but. Effervescent, catchy pop melodies abound and Selena Gomez' singing has never sounded better.
7. Chris Brown - F.A.M.E.
Much of the entertainment industry wondered if Chris Brown's music career could truly recover from his well publicized personal legal issues. As this album landed at the top of the album chart in its first week, that question was answered with an adamant, "Yes." This album moves Chris Brown forward as an adult performer while also reminding us all of his strengths with charming vocals and dance moves.
6. Tinie Tempah - Disc-Overy
If you ever wondered what epic pop blended with rapid fire British accented rap would sound like, then Tinie Tempah is here to show you. This album introduces one of last year's biggest new UK artists to US pop fans, and the translation is a successful one.
5. Paul Simon - So Beautiful Or So What
At age 69, the legendary Paul Simon returned with an album that shows he can produce contemporary pop just as well as any other current artist. He incorporates the songwriting capabilities he has demonstrated in his entire career with Graceland - era rhythmic sensibility and a strong awareness of current digital music. The result is one of the very best albums of his solo career.
4. Britney Spears - Femme Fatale
If you combine the ferocity of Blackout and the pop hit sensibilities of Circus, this is the Britney Spears album you will get. There is humor, sex, and a hint of melancholy emotion all set to thoroughly contemporary dance pop.
3. Foo Fighters - Wasting Light
Quite simply, this is one of the most powerful and best Foo Fighters albums ever. That is a cause for celebration. Much of the album is powerful rock, but it will appeal to pop fans who like to hear a rock edge.
2. Adele - 21
Anyone who heard Adele's debut album 19 knew she was capable of an album this powerful. Compared with her debut, the songs here are stronger and more resonant and the production enhances instead of obscures any of the power of Adele's voice and delivery. 21 has made Adele an international pop sensation for good reason.
1. Lady Gaga - Born This Way
Lady Gaga told us this would be the album of the decade. That may be overstating the fact a bit, but Born This Way is a pop landmark. This collection of songs is a wild rollercoaster ride of music wrapped around a powerful argument for personal freedom. This is the album of the year so far and even more firmly establishes Lady Gaga as the pop artist of the moment.
