La Roux: 2nd studio album anticipation
"I’d like a more sexual feel to the record, but not in a sex-in-the-club kinda way — the way sexy was before it got made dirty. Sexy can be classy, sexy can be cool, sexy can be actually sexy." - Elly Jackson
Collaborating with White Lies
Quote:
La Roux's Elly Jackson has revealed that she is writing her new album with an "established" indie band.
Jackson, speaking in the new issue of NME, declined to name the band, although it is rumoured to be White Lies.
White Lies' spokesperson could not confirm or deny whether they were involved yet.
Speaking of the hook-up, Jackson said: "I've been writing with some friends from another band, but I wont say who they are." She added that the band are "established, but not like Kings Of Leon-established or anything…"
Meanwhile, Jackson also said she is feeling the pressure to write an album that will be as successful as her band's 2009 debut. "I know I'm not going to stop writing until we've got songs that can compete on the same level as 'In For The Kill' and 'Bulletproof'," she explained.

On losing the quiff, her Grammy, and inspiration for the nest album.
Quote:
A week has passed since she won her Grammy, and Elly Jackson is still reeling. "I’m in a haze," says the 23-year-old singer, one half of the British synth-pop duo La Roux, as she heads to a London DJ gig in a cab in late February. "It’s a feeling you expect to pass, but then you realize it’s not gonna pass, that you’re gonna have a Grammy forever." When asked where she plans to showcase the award, Jackson chuckles before launching into a story of cultural nuance. "On the red carpet I said to one guy that I might put it in the toilet," she says. "He was like, 'Oh, my God, do you really not care about your Grammy that much that you’re going to put it in the toilet?!' I was like, 'No! I’m gonna put it on the shelf in my restroom! I don’t have a mantle, and I guess it’s a British thing to put your awards in the bathroom, but after how offended he was, maybe I won’t."
It’s the kind of unassuming anecdote you’d expect to hear from a pop music newcomer who has referred to her look as “androgynous moody bitch,” a modish, nervy performer who for the past two years has flaunted a much-imitated, cloud-sweeping ginger quiff to rival Morrissey’s circa Bona Drag (like him, she won’t discuss the specifics of her sexuality). A year ago Jackson and keyboardist Ben Langmaid were merely a blip on America’s radar. Then came the single "Bulletproof," their irresistable pogoing, Gloria Gaynor–trapped-in-an-Atari post-breakup survivor anthem. It cracked Billboard’s top 10 last summer and went double platinum. Kanye West then tapped Jackson to contribute vocals to two tracks on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy -- "All of the Lights" and "Lost in the World" -- and to "That’s My Bitch," a song they recorded with Jay-Z for the rappers’ joint EP Watch My Throne. But the watershed was the Grammy for best electronic/dance album that La Roux snagged for their self-titled debut, beating out upperclassmen the Chemical Brothers, Goldfrapp, and Groove Armada with a project they recorded in their living room.
Still the wide-eyed ingénue, Jackson marvels at her profile in the United States. "We went to this incredible house in the hills," she says, running through her post-Grammys festivities. "It had the most amazing view and statues of dolphins around the pool. Just after I left the party, I found out that Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Brandy had come down to say hello to me, but I’d gone!" Yet like the savvy pop-star pros before her, she says she’s ready for the next stage in the fame game. "The pompadour is no more, I’m afraid," she says. "I’ve moved on. I’ve become much more interested in a simple flick, something slightly more classic."
And though she struck gold with her first effort, a bubbly, noirish homage to ’80s groups like Depeche Mode and the Human League, don’t expect Jackson to retrace her steps for its follow-up, which she and Langmaid have already started writing. "I’ve been listening to a lot of classic disco, a lot of ‘State of Independence’–era Donna Summer and Grace Jones and Tom Tom Club," she says. "I’d like a more sexual feel to the record, but not in a sex-in-the-club kinda way -- the way sexy was before it got made dirty. Sexy can be classy, sexy can be cool, sexy can be actually sexy."

We've written two singles already.
Quote:
La Roux says she has changed her voice and the way she singes for the band's second album.
La Roux says her voice has changed for the band's second album. Flame haired singer Elly Jackson is giving up her trademark high pitched vocals for the group's next record, and said the sound she and collaborator Ben Langmaid have been coming up with marks a shift from their self titled debut.
Elly said: "Some of the new stuff I've played for people, everyone's like, 'Wow, this sounds really different.'
"My voice has changed as well. There's only one track so far that's got a higher vocal on it, like on the majority of the first record. All of the other tracks I've written I've found this deeper area of my voice, it's got more of a Stevie Nicks tone to it." The 'In For The Kill' singer also acknowledges they have a lot of pressure to live up to follow up the group's well received debut album, but said she's comfortable the songs they've written so far. She added to NME magazine: "There is pressure, but the pressure from myself is always a lot worse because I just have such high standards. But I'd be an idiot and a liar if I said I didn't want to repeat the success. "We've written two singles already I'm not going to stop until we've got songs which can compete on the same level as 'In For The Kill' and 'Bulletproof'."

La Roux in February.

“They told me it wasn’t my real Grammy. It was very weird.”
This weekend, Roxy hosted their seventh annual Chicken Jam, a snowboarding contest and three-day party that sticks professional athletes, fashion editors, and rock royalty at the top of Mammoth California’s mountain lodge, then waits to see what happens.
This year, the special musical guest was La Roux, and although Ellie Jackson didn’t hit the snowboarding slopes with Olympic gold medalist Torah Bright (preferring to ski with her band, instead), she turned out a roaring full set on Saturday night - all while a blizzard dumped almost ten feet of snow outside.
We grabbed our duck boots and found La Roux just before her concert…
Hi, I’m from NYLON. Oh, please interview me! I did a really, really bad interview for NYLON TV last year. I did it on a bean bag in Marvin’s office, and I had my makeup done by this poor guy who didn’t know what was going on with me and my style. He did this fluorescent pink makeup on me, and I was new to the game so I didn’t know to say, “Dude, not like that.” I look good, but not like myself, and it just threw me off. I’ve always wanted NYLON to interview me again so I could say, “Dear readers, definitely forget that interview. Please!”
You got it. What are you wearing now? It’s definitely not pink eye shadow. This is a vintage YSL jacket from the late ’80s.
How’d you get to the Roxy Chicken Jam in the middle of a blizzard? One of the Roxy boarders drove us in from Reno. The roads were closed, and I woke up at 5 AM, dying to ski, watching the sun rise over the mountains. I was like, “I can’t handle this!” So we got into the Roxy team car and powered over here.
I’m sad you didn’t snowboard with us! No, you don’t want to see me snowboard. I’m crap. I love to ski, but the conditions were really harsh today; it was all ice.
How’s the new album going? Yeah, good question. It’s going slowly because we don’t believe in rushing. And nowadays - well probably always, but it’s particularly bad now - record labels don’t make as much money as they used to anymore, so there’s this huge rush factor. The A&R man want their bonuses and everyone wants to get paid, and you know, that’s fair enough, everyone’s got lives and mortgages and stuff, but it’s not helpful for the greater process. We didn’t rush the first record and we don’t intend to rush this one. You know, we’ve laid down a few tracks and we’ve got a lot of ideas but we don’t have a set date for it to finish.
I heard a rumor the new album is about old-fashioned sex and romance. It kind of is about sex! And yes, old fashioned sex! It’s kind of about romance, too, but it’s kind of about exploring the thought process of when you begin to have dark thoughts - well, that sounds a bit too intense and pretentious. It’s not like that! “It’s about the dark side of sex!” No. It’s more about when you see a lot of character traits in people that you wouldn’t notice when you’re younger. I find them really interesting. It’s something when you were a kid, you would think it was awful or never consider, and then you realize the human mind justifies things that aren’t right. Like, “What’s it like to have an affair?” “What would it feel like if I went to see a prostitute?”
We tried to Twitter you, but it didn’t work. We need to change my Twitter account. It says it’s not me tweeting, but it so is! Everybody tweet to me!
When we announced on @nylonmag that we were interviewing you, we got so many tweets asking about your hair. That’s so weird! Okay, it’s not so weird, I had a really big quiff and La Roux means “Red Haired One” so there’s definitely a hair factor but it’s kind of changed. The quiff’s not really there any more, I cut it all off. The quiff is no more, so we’ve said goodbye to that chapter of my hair. I made my hair quite a big thing; it was good to have the hair because people recognized me, but maybe I want to move away from that now. I want to be less silly and more slick. My style changed, everything’s changed and I don’t want to be like that anymore. I’m done with that now.
What’s a fun American thing that you’re obsessed with? Walmart. We’re like, “Oh my god, there’s nothing in here except for juice from concentrate.” We love Walmart. But I want to go to Target next; that’s where our records get sold!
Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever heard one of your songs? In a Walmart? No. Not that I know of, anyway… where was it? It was in a restroom in Bulgaria. How’s that for random?
Where do you keep your Grammy? I don’t actually have a Grammy yet. They took it away from me right after the ceremony; they said it was just a prop and they wouldn’t even let my sister take a picture of me and the Grammy with her phone. I was very confused. I’d like to back, please.

It was intended to be the fourth single after Bulletproof, but it was scrapped, I think because the bridge was reminiscent of Michael Jackson's Thriller, and it would have been released right after he died, the footage was only just leaked. But I really would like the video to be released, at least for the fans.

I cannot wait. Their debut was AMAZING. I hope "sexier" means 70s-influenced. I can hear it now. It'd be to-die-for.

I'm blushing over here.

Elly's new hairstyle
I like it, I think it's very classy, I will miss the quiff though, although I preferred the beginning days of the quiff when it looked more natural, it became a bit harsh towards the end of the era. But I think this new hairstyle will suit the new era.

Yes, I only really needed Under My Thumb, because I had all the rest, but the live versions and the demo of Tigerlily were nice additions.
