J.Lo is an icon. Ok, Shakira is more recognized in the music industry and has better vocals, but all together, JLo is more important. She's everywhere: movies, music, dancing, tv shows, jewelry, clothes, fragrances, everywhere. i think the problem is that J.Lo is really really underrated.

But of course will not be the atrlers deciding the truth. Shakira is a great singer, but JLo is iconic, and not because she has "a big ass" or because "she copied the lambada". thats SO unfair. Waka waka is not original neither, so do not come with on the floor.

She does play istruments, for example the piano.

shakira is a better singer, I agree with that. But only with that.

JLo didnt sold so much in the music industry, because she wanted to work in other things, for example cinema, she had projects for her clothes line and frangrances, etc.

If she had done worldwide tours like shakira, im sure Jennifer Lopez would be a bigger star than Britney Spears, because JLo really knows how to perform and how to put the public speechless, and y'all have to admit that this is true. Her performances are always great.

Again it still depends where you are. Everything that you've stated have only been hits in the Anglo counries but only some are true worldwide hits. Even with no promo Shakira still sells in Europe and Latin America. not to mention in the past shakira also scored a few worldwide hits and she has had less english studio albums and singles released overall. she always has a monster hit from each album. J lo hasn't done that.

That being said I really don't think icon status can be judged on the numbe rof hits you score, and what region they're in. it's hard to compare anyway since their careers are totally different and have started at different times and their music clearly aims at different audiences. i think it's more what they do and their achievemnts

i dont know much about J lo but Shakira is not only a fantastic singer, dancer, she is also such a philanthropist and shes been recognised worldwide consistently and even got the HARVARD artst of the year in 2010 which enver goes to a musician.

Im sure J lo does lots too but the fact is that a lot of people, including myself just see her as a semisinger/semiactress with a few endorsements here and there. im NOT saying that she does less than what she's done, but for a person to be an icon, the public decides and as far as i know, I don't actually know much about J Lo and that's exactly my point, she hasn't done anything substantial for me to consider her an icon. even without being a stan i know of shakira's worlwide hit waka waka and her philanthropy echoes everywhere.

The reason why she isn't so famous is because she tries to spread herself too much in so many different fields instead of concentrating on one or two. People like britnye, shakira, when the time comes always focuses on the music and ditch everythign else because that's what they want to do. like you said J lo had a lot of potential with her msuci career but she never took it seriously by touring and stuff because she was pursuing acting perfumes and other stuff. If she actually focused and said ok I want to be a huge music star and did worldwide tours then true, she would be bigger than britney or if she said Ill be a serious actress (which btw she is a great one) then she would be a huge actress.

yeah, i get what you mean. But it's unfair! because you can't even imagine how JLo works hard to have some recognition.. thats what makes me SAD. because she triessssssssss hard hard hard to do things well, but she's always SO underrated.
And thats what I love in Jennifer. She never gives up, even if she has the whole world against her. thats what JLo fans love in her.

I want to apologize to the ones who felt like I bashed Jennifer, because that really isn't the case guys I really do like Jennifer, but as previously mentioned, I also, see her as only a semi-singer and semi-actress, and saying that she could have sold A LOT more by really commiting to her career instead of being busy is like for me to say "I would be the most successful artist of all time if I just got the chance." - it counts for nothing! Jennifer would never get as much credit or as many accomplishments in music as Shakira will, and that is OK. Jennifer is still incredibly influential as a person, but I just don't see her as important as Shakira. And you can't say that she would have had a world tour if she wasn't so busy, because you don't know that. Maybe they tried to do it but she didn't get enough demands for tickets? She was so popular back then, OF COURSE they would have made a world tour, and her being busy isn't a good reason to deny a world tour.

Also, when I said that JLO is known for her big ass, I didn't mean it in a negative way, I meant that her ass has been talked about a lot, a lot, a lot by the media, and that she is somewhat known for it. You know? People often say "That girl has a JLO ass!", she invented that frase almost. It really wasn't meant like she was just known for having a big ass, we ALL know that is far from the truth and a really ignorant statement.

And trying it with On The Floor by saying it was just a rip-off of the Lambada, is also something I did NOT do. I told it like it was: It is sampled by the Lambada which is already a mega hit. Yes Waka Waka was also sampled by a very unknown song, so not already a hit. And if you think it sounded negative to say that Waka Waka was more meaningfull and that OTF was just about drinking and dancing, then that is actually true anyway, that doesn't take away the success of the song ofc. It's just the truth. I really like OTF much more than a lot of the mega hits of 2011.

And if any of you think I made JLO's accomplishments seem small compared to Shakira's, well, I thought it was a pretty good summary of what she has done! I could have talked about her jewelry line, hugely successfull perfume line and all that, but then you guys would have been like: "OOOH, You make it seem like JLO is selling out and just wants money bitch!", so I didn't want to include them, and hey, jewelry and perfume isn't gonna make anybody legendary or remembered or iconic. We all know that, so why bother with using that as an excuse? I didn't write about her hits either, because I didn't write about Shakira's. I'm not comparing their collection of singles because they are not very much alike!
