And it's a dumb assertion to make that the British love depressing songs when their charts are almost identical to ours. And Americans had no issues with making the wretched "Jar of Hearts" a decent sized hit.

Almost identical is what I said. The UK charts are not full of depressing love songs, so you failed. They still have dance-pop hits all over those charts. It did well because people liked the song.
