I'm curious about why the people weren't holding on or making sure they were balanced... Escalators don't move that quickly, so when it started going backwards people should have held on. I'm assuming someone (possibly someone large) fell backward and knocked a lot of people down. It's very sad, terrifying, but it could have been prevented if people hadn't taken for granted that the escalator would always work as intended. After all, it is a machine...

It sounds to me like it reversed quickly and sent everyone flying back.
What a horrible way to die Such a tragedy, poor people I just don't get how an escalator going backwards caused such a travesty, it had to go really fast cause I do believe that if not, people could have prevented it. Either way i'm done with elevators
