Sequels to franchises where people in the major markets like the US/UK have lost interest still do incredibly well (and often significantly better) in other countries. Part of it is just the increasingly favorable exchange rate as well as the continued expansion of those film markets, particularly China and Russia.
Pirates 4 has basically been a non-event in the US compared to the previous films, but it's going to be by far the highest grossing entry in the franchise internationally. It's just one example of an overarching pattern that's developed in the past few years. 3D has also had more of a noticeable effect in surging grosses overseas from higher ticket prices.
Also, Johnny Depp remains the demon Japan clings to. They seemingly can't get enough of him.
