This is based on calendar year. TT sold like 2m (?) of its copies in 2009. That's why I think it's more accurate to do it the way they do for film gross -- the biggest hit of the year is the song released in that year that ended up selling the most overall, not just within a certain period of time. Songs/albums that have their sales split substantially over multiple years get screwed over in the comparison.
