He doesn't need her, don't be silly. And the fact that he just stated in Vanity Fair that it wasn't meant to be means he hasn't been sitting around for years wondering what would have been if their relationship hadn't ended, he knows it wouldn't have lasted. They were young and dated because no one else was around to date and there were similarities to their upbringing, and then they broke up. The end.

Wanting to try new things and stepping out of your comfort zone isn't being selfish. Honestly, pretty much everyone tries both acting and singing at some point in their career now. He acted a little when he was a child, it was only a matter of time that he'd take a try at it again. It's not like it was back in the day when you were one or the other. It's his life and he can do whatever makes him happy.
