I'm glad you mentioned it.
The way I see it:
Best New Artist
1. Nicki Minaj
She is the only lock.
The remaining contenders will come from this fields:
The Brits
- Jessie J
- Ellie Goulding
- Tinie Tempah
Jessie's had the biggest push, but Price Tag has not been the hit I'm sure her label thought it would be. Ellie will not be breaking out on pop radio - but she did get a SNL slot. Tinie has had the biggest hit, but will anyone buy his album? And will there be room for possibly three rappers? The last time that quasi happened was 88-89, with Neneh Cherry (obviously Nicki's predecessor) and Young MC (Or was it Tone Loc?) popping up.
The Country Crew
- The Band Perry
- Thompkins Square
TBP has the edge, but their biggest hit was a hit LAST eligibility period, while TS's single is taking off now.
The Unexpected Crossovers
- Wiz Khalifa
- Foster The People
Wiz would seem to have the better shot - he did have a number one single - but he might be seen as having a story that's a little
too similar to Nicki's. Foster The People is currently looking to have a big crossover hit with Pumped Up Kicks, and if some facet of Top 40 takes hold, they could MGMT their way into the race.
The Indie Superstars who are not actually new
- TV on the Radio
- Fleet Foxes
