Not in the 2000s. The internet wasn't as big, lots of people didn't have an internet connection and the ripping software wasn't as good as it is today. Experts have estimated that Lady Gaga already had a billion (!) illegal downloads.

If you consider the inflation and purchasing power, it's still the same at the same costs in cases where albums are $9. Amazon isn't the only store that sold loads of BTW copies. Don't forget iTunes where the deluxe is #1 and $16,-

Maybe so, but there were nowhere NEAR the capacity they are now.
Nobody downloaded illegally in the states until the Napster wave came through which changed the entire music industry.

A billion is 1 sixth of the World's population. Let's not reach.

what is the difference between buying an album for 1 dollar than illegally downloading it tho
In fact when you download an album illegally it is not guaranteed to be HQ and it is annoying to pass through pages of links taken down and stuff

Britney fans, let's keep up with the times, shall we? It's 2011, not 1998. The R-rated comedy wowing audiences in theatres right now is The Hangover 2, not There's Something About Mary. The teeny bop sensation making tween girls scream is Justin Bieber, not The BackStreet Boys. And albums simply cannot sell like they used to. Not when last year, in the UK alone (a country that is generally good at buying music), over 1.2 BILLION songs were illegally downloaded. That's just the UK. Why else did Britney go from scoring diamond albums to huffing and puffing her way to 500K?

Well that's mainly because the public has lost interest in her. Britney Spears now is not Britney Spears.

The thing is that certain Stefani stans seem to ignore the music industry change too, just to maximize Britney's decline in sales.

No, if anything Stefani fans point it out continuously to show that how many albums Gaga is selling is just as impressive as Britneys 1.3 mill debut even if she doesnt get there.

Yes. I was generally speaking because that's not a recent thing. It has nothing to do with the "Born This Way" release.
