It's called marketing. Ultimately, the goal when you release an album is to sell it as much as possible, something that Britney's team has forgotten a long time ago.
However, to sell the album 99 cents wasn't the decision of her label. It's not the first time Amazon does this. It's a promotion to attract new customers to their MP3 store and in my opinion, it's also a great way to avoid piracy.
Born This Way first week sales are gonna be HUGE. Deal with it. |

Why do you girls keep responding to those who missed the point that GaGa and her label had nothing to do with it? Just entertain those who understand that point but think that the 99 cents deal helped a lot.

= 919,000 copies.
Wow, even combined they're not selling as much as Gaga.

None, because they don't have the power and relevance Gaga has today. Her album was one of the most anticipated by far, so of course Amazon is going to use her to propel their business. Who knows, maybe they will do the same with '4'.
