I thought it's like you record your voice for the single ((not using the studio version one)) and still, you sing live. It only helps you some part of the song where you can't handle it.

Pre-recorded vocals is just vocals that aren't the studio version but were recorded sometime before the performance to give it a 'live' sound. That's pretty much it. Most artists use pre-recorded vocals in their performances and the artist just sings over the back track.

when you move your mouth to something not coming from your mouth, its lip syncing. And yeah, that Britney performance was too, you can tell cos its breathy and her vocals are totally different
