She doesn't have a hit right now? She has four songs in the Top 25, & one just re-entered the Top 10 with a thirty-second performance of it. One is Top 25 despite getting extremely poor radio reception. One is still Top 15 despite its airplay disappearing a month ago. And then there's Hair, of course, the countdown single that seems set to debut in the Top 10 of the next released digital charts. Lady GaGa has always been a great single seller & still is.
But she is also a great album seller, & an artist with despite less than 3 years in the game, has one of the highest-grossing tours of all time. So the humungous expectations are expected, but this is too much. My personal opinion is that no album should ever be expected to open with 1 million. This is setting yourself up for disappointment, or satisfaction if you want her to sell less. I would think 600-700K is a reasonable number to start with to expect. Personally, I've seen how pop albums like Loud & Teenage Dream have opened & know pop albums sometimes do not pull numbers that would be expected. I think 500K+ is reasonable for her in the US & million worldwide.
The last albums to open with a million exlusively in the US were not pop albums. Tha Carter III was a hip-hop album, & hip-hop albums typically have frontloaded sales. That was the case with Tha Carter III, because Wayne has a devoted fanbases that bought it the first week. Everyone already knows country albums sell better than pop albums & that was an advantage for Taylor Swift, since she switches between the genre. At the moment, her sales are a bit frontloaded too, & I hope, more than anything, Born This Way has a lot of longetivity. Interscope thankfully has ginormous faith in the project & they're promoting the album like they should be.
