Exactly, you're not having any nutrition, that's why he lost weight. Water has no nutrition, therefore, won't do anything except fill you up, which is why people tend to drink it because it won't get you fatter like some juices/sodas might.
Note that drinking water alone won't do much, but it will have an effect when used in combination with an effective calorie defecit- meal plan and exercise program.
I know this is a little OT, but I use to drink 8 bottle of water (500ml each/4L) a day to clear up my acne, so that means I would have to substitute water and give up drinking pop. Even though it didn't help with my acne, today I still drink 8 bottle of water, if not more, and I am no longer addicted to pop. I use to be so tempted drinking a can of pop but now I'm not. I also no longer drink milk, orange juice, apple juice, etc unless I'm at a party.
