I thought I would start a thread where I could accumulate the critical reviews of The Edge of Glory as they come out, as they should over the next few weeks.
NME Review --- 9/10
Excerpt: It feels like a pop moment without her trying too hard. ‘Effortlessness’ is a word that seems to have been absent during this album campaign. As we’ve seen, Gaga’s strengths do not lie in addressing Big Topics, teetering on the knife edge of Madonna - making grab-bag religious references with all the depth of a shallow pool. ‘Edge Of Glory’ is simple. And it is, quite simply a Great Pop Moment.
Excerpt: The song takes an unexpected turn midway through, when Bruce Springsteen’s E Street sax player Clarence Clemons delivers a solo in his unmistakable style. The emotional solo leads into a climactic final chorus, a powerful way to end the record.
Gaga wrote the song after the death of her grandfather. In interviews, Gaga has stated the song is about a person’s last moment before leaving the earth. If that’s the case, what a fun way to go out!
Excerpt: "The Edge Of Glory" is backed with plenty of disco and club sounds while maintaining a pop-rock attitude. There is also a huge saxophone solo from Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. It remains to be seen, but I suggest pop radio stations drop "Judas" and put "The Edge Of Glory" into top rotation right away. This is destined to be a classic Lady Gaga song.
I am not here for Poker Face, Paparazzi, Bad Romance, Alejandro & Judas like you are, you need to be able to respect my opinion every once in awhile. Just Dance, LoveGame, Telephone, Born This Way & Edge Of Glory I prefer her light, fluffy, simple songs, and Edge Of Glory is by far the best for me out of all 10. Just bought it from iTunes
