i don't see any difference between the actual formats, but i prefer itunes because files have correct tags and covers and it's easier to put on ipod

They're about the same, .m4a is clearer when you play it loud.

I know this is a dumb question but if iTunes is the biggest digital site and their files are m4a, then how is mp3 still the most popular music file? Do these stats include illegal files?

iTunes only sells released things. There's bootlegs, concerts, fanmade things, compliations, remixes, leaked tracks, etc.
And M4A/AAC cannot be played universally, MP3 is more supported.

.m4a is only organized properly when its an itunes rip, its no different to other formats

FORTUNATELY however, I have a program to convert from m4a to mp3.

I got RTW (girls) from i tunes and listen to it on my mp3

MP3. Also because I use Windows Media Player to burn CD, and that program doesn't allow me to burn .M4A files

.m4a is just classier.

Although 2 years ago I restrained myself from downloading m4a files because I thought it was a virus. didnt know it was the formatting on iTunes.
