Yes because football players are supposed to be overweight/obese depending on the position they play! It's a different purpose.
I don't think the OP wants to gain fat, but rather muscle.

I can't add much to what has already been said but basically you'll need to get your own workout schedule and stick to it. Remember consistency and hard work are the keys to great fitness, overall body and mind strength. Furthermore, as you will be working out 3-5 times per week you will need to increase you daily calorie intake as your body will require more calories to replace and replenish the muscle that was worn and torn during your workout sessions. PLEASE REMEMBER that by increasing your calorie intake we're talking about GOOD calories - low-gi foods such as fish, chicken (white meat), lentils, fruits and vegetables etc. You'll be fine and always try to push yourself whenever you hit the gym because we want the heart rate to increase and therefore you will tear (good tearing) more muscle and get more out of your workout.

Protein supplements aren't necessary for body building however if you're a busy person it's quite handy to have a protein shake right after your workout if you're on the go. For example, I usually go to the gym before I have a morning class therefore I take a protein shake and my protein needs are satisfied until around lunch time. REMEMBER, protein shakes and other related products are supplements therefore they should never replace healthy eating and a high intake of foods containing high levels of protein such as nuts (also contains really good fats), fish, milk (skim preferably), eggs (egg-white only), grains, muesli and certain breads etc.

Why would you need to gain weight faster? Is it for sports? Doing well at the gym and with strength/resistance training is all about consistency. Allowing your body time to heal and repair is just as important as going to the gym to hit the weights itself. Let's not forget that the actual building of any muscle occurs when you're not at the gym so if you want to gain muscle faster than your body rests and repairs you have no real choice but to take artificial proteins, supplements etc. I don't recommend it though. Perhaps you could hire a personal trainer to help you with doing each and every machine/exercise with the right technique then... you're targeting the right muscle groups resulting in you getting more from your gym sessions.

My friend drinks a carton of soy milk after his workouts and gets the SAME (if not more) amount of protein you would get from one of those shakes. And his arms are like tree trunks.

Eat a lot of lean meat, lol. And do lots of exercise!
Can someone help me, too? I need to lose weight. I just finished a glass of Reese's ice cream and a box of chooclate chip cookies. I feel so guilty now.

I want to gain weight, too. I'm a man and I am tall and very skinny. I hate it because I eat like everyone else and I don't gain a pound, nor do I lose pounds. Maybe I burn too much calories because of high metabolism, and I guess I need to increase my protein intake. My mom is like EAT chips, bread (unhealthy bread), whatever you find. I want to gain weight in the healthiest way possible. I made an appointment with a nutriologist this week so I'm hoping she'll give me a high calorie diet that's also healthy, and I'd probably join the gym.

DON'T FEEL GUILTY, there's your help. It's OK to eat the sugars and the fats but only in moderation. But please once you eat the junk DON'T feel guilty about the action. You need to control your mind and just learn to say no sometimes Be pro-active. Moderation is the absolute key.

Running/Jogging/fast walking will tone up the butt and trim the fat & squats as shown here will tone your thighs as well as your 'butt'. Remember when doing the squat to keep your butt sticking out and your back as straight as possible.

There's your answer. I absolutely enjoy going to the gym, it only helps with the motivation to build up my body. And sorry to say it but please don't listen to your mother, she's only harming your health with encouraging the intake of highly processed, high-gi foods.

Thanks! I actually don't wanna be a muscular, toned-up guy, I just want volume to not look so skinny, but I don't want it to be just fat. I wanna go to the gym and tell the guy I don't care about my pecs, I want arms and a bigger back, and maybe a six pack.
And of course I don't listen to my mom, especially when it comes to that because I am in med school and now the deal.
