we've never gone by percentages before when estimating hot 100 lists, and it's always been accurate. When it's been really close, streaming usually makes up the difference, depending on who has a video or not.
i think it's point-based.
how else could those American Idol songs get to #1 on their own without airplay when sales only makes up 40% of the equation?

Going by this, my estimated year-end Top 5 so far is:
1. Grenade
2. Firework
3. **** You
4. ****in' Perfect
5. Born This Way
E.T. is going to be #1 by around July though when all those songs above get less and less sales and recurrent airplay. Firework might also pass Grenade because of its AC airplay.

I think so, especially if it comes off the heels of Rolling In The Deep.

yep this is what I was trying to understand. a song can go #1 on airplay or sales alone and well, though never happened, on streaming alone too if it gets gazillion views. that's how I understand the system

The Year-end Hot 100 will count Grenade and Firework's huge Christmas sales week as well as the succeeding weeks, which is estimated to be over 1.5M for each, which is still a lot for E.T. to catch up on.

Glee is another prime example of why it's point-based. They don't have any airplay, and yet they can debut in the top 10 with just sales.

The only times streaming made a difference from what I remember is when OG got screwed for like two weeks by Like A G6.

i think Firework will beat E.T. in the end because it will have longevity on HotAC and AC. It's a huge staple already. I can imagine LFN will be the same, but it might come out too late to be a serious contender. I think so far it will be:
Firework
Grenade
**** You
E.T.
****in' Perfect
...
...
...
20. Born This Way (doesn't have enough overall airplay, and sales aren't THAT fantastic)

plus the week when it was Love the Way You Lie vs. Teenage Dream. TD actually had more chart points (sales + airplay), but LTWYL beat it out because of heavy streaming.

California Gurls came in May and went to #4 on the year-end chart, so it could be possible for LFN as well. Imagine Katy with 3 songs in the Top 10.

So "Blow " has sold 1,337,000 in 2011 which definitly means it's passed 1.4 million overall.

I remember those painful 2 weeks inside the Rihanna Navy Only Girl would have been a 3 week+ number one if only Def Jam and Rih played the game right.

Its sales don’t count because of iTunes’ “Complete My Album” feature.

However, there is one very big difference that you did not take into consideration: California Gurls was the lead single, while Last Friday Night will be a fifth single. LFN may still have a very successful run on the charts, but I would not hold my breath with expectations that a fifth single will perform just as well as the lead single.

This. LFN has a LOT of potential, but it's already a 5th Single. I'll be very happy with 3xPlatinum (even with 2xPlatinum.)
