Did GaGa go too far with "Judas"?
No shade intended, so pressed souls, do not report this.

As if the cover and release date weren’t enough, Lady Gaga also revealed that the video of the song will be very similar to the video for Alejandro. She’ll reportedly be impersonating a Mary-like character and will be found kissing a Jesus character.
And in case you forgot, the video for Alejandro featured her swallowing a rosary and almost having sex in front of a Cross.
Judas is supposedly a song that doesn’t tackle religion in any way. So what she’s doing comes off as cheap and only as a way to get more hype.
Many of people wouldn’t care less about all of is. They just go gaga for Gaga. But there’s a certain limit where entertainment becomes plain ridiculous or rude and where certain boundaries should be drawn. And the sad thing? Going all religiously-controversial will definitely be promoted by today’s media, which only craves for things like this.
However, Lady Gaga’s career, which is still undoubtedly new, is already getting way overblown – especially with her way out of the box behavior and religious attitude. Some people are saying she’s copying Madonna whose attitude towards Christianity in particular is widely known. But that doesn’t give her the excuse to go excessive with everything she does.
Lady Gaga needs to tone it down on the religious stabs because at the end of the day, they will get old – and so will she.

Lady Gaga’s latest single, “Judas,” may be a hit with her fans but not with the Catholic church.
The fame monster has created a Holy Week uproar after the single leaked on the Internet last Friday. The song, which is now available for download on iTunes, expresses love for Judas – the apostle who betrayed Jesus.
“Because of her fame and her notoriety and the influence that she has with young people on the culture, one would think that she would learn to back off,” Bill Donohue, of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, told 1010 WINS. “Why does she always have to be edgy with my religion? Why can’t she just simply say, ‘Look, it didn’t work out,’ get divorced from Catholicism and move on.”
This is not Gaga’s first run-in with the Catholic church. In the video for her chart-topping single, “Alejandro,” the New York native dressed up as a nun and swallowed a rosary.
Donohue believes the release of the single at the start of Holy Week was intentional and that it’s “one more example of her ethics.”
“She chooses Holy Week to basically stick it to Catholics again,” Donohue said. “One would think that a Grammy award winner would be able to do this on her own merits without engaging in these kinds of antics. While it’s not the worst we’ve seen here at the Catholic League, she is bothersome.”
In the song, Gaga proclaims, “I’m just a holy fool, oh baby he’s so cruel but I’m still in love with Judas, baby” and “Jesus is my virtue but Judas is the demon I cling to.”
Lady Gaga has not released a comment.
Her new album, “Born This Way,” will be released next month. HBO will also be showing a special concert series on her “Monster Ball” Tour on May 7.

The anticipated Easter release of Lady Gaga's new video "Judas" is infuriating some Catholics and other Christian conservatives. "Judas" is the latest single from Lady Gaga's hit album "Born This Way." Some critics claim the music and video to be blasphemous, and complain an Easter release of the video is only adding insult to injury.
Tuesday an angry Bill Donohue, President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, appeared on Fox News, complaining about Lady Gaga and her treatment of the Catholic Church:
"This is a stunt…Lady Gaga tries to continue to shock Catholics and Christians in general: she dresses as a nun… she swallows the rosary. She has now morphed into a caricature of herself."
"People have real talent, and then there is Lady Gaga. I find Gaga to be increasingly irrelevant. Is this the only way to jet up her performance? This isn’t random, we are getting closer to Holy Week and Easter."
''She is trying to rip off Christian idolatry to shore up her talentless, mundane and boring performances.''
In "Judas" Gaga sings from Mary Magdalene's perspective:
Quote:
"When he comes to me, I am ready/I'll wash his feet with my hair if he needs/Forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain/Even after three times, he betrays me…"
|
According to the New Testament, Judas Iscariot, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus, betrayed Jesus. In “Judas,” Lady Gaga sings about her love for Judas:
Quote:
"Jesus in my virtue and Judas is the demon I cling to...I'm just a holy fool, oh baby he's so cruel, but I'm still in love with Judas baby."
|
A sample of reaction from Tuesday's Twitter stream shows mixed feelings about Gaga's "Judas":
Quote:
On "Judas": LADY GAGA, DID THE CHRISTIANS BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN YET!?
Lady Gaga outrages Catholics during Holy Week with new single 'Judas'
Wooow. Just listened to Lady Gaga's new song 'Judas'. Absolutely terrible and disrespectful to God. I won't ever support anything of hers.
the catholic church needs to shut the f*ck up. I hate being catholic. your preists molest children, and your worrying about gaga? please.
Pope Benedict XVI is sick, and he's blaming Lady Gaga.
Lady Gaga's "Judas" video coming out on Easter Sunday? Things that make you go #hmmm
okay. gaga has taken it entirely too far. judas? cmon now. i was all for 'born this way'. but that judas song is clearly satanic.
and then it goes into the hook "I love Judas"....yeah...Gaga, there is a nice little corner in Hell just you people like you. #Blasphemy
Why is everyone so upset over lady gaga's judas?

Pop provocateur Lady Gaga has managed to outrage and insult many Catholics by leaking her new song, “Judas” just two days before the start of Holy Week.
"It's always edgy and always (about) our religion," Bill Donohue, spokesperson for the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, said about frequent pop culture attacks on the Church. "(And) all during Holy Week."
In “Judas,” Lady Gaga sings about her love for Judas, the infamous apostle who betrayed Jesus.
"Jesus in my virtue and Judas is the demon I cling to...I'm just a holy fool, oh baby he's so cruel, but I'm still in love with Judas baby," sings Lady Gaga.
The 25-year old pop star, who was raised Catholic, seems to be taking cues from Madonna and Sinead O’Conner—both lapsed Catholics who courted controversy (and publicity) by using religious imagery in their performances and videos.
O’Conner infuriated the entire Eastern Seaboard when she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II and called him “evil” on “Saturday Night Live” in 1992.

I think that on “Judas” she is simply using a brilliant metaphor to make a record about falling in love with the wrong person. I LOVE the song (I believe in God, and I love that cover, while “Jesus in my virtue and Judas is the demon I cling to” is my favorite line from the song.) I think it will become a massive smash after the video is out (only an idiot would consider this a potential flop,) but these religious fanatics are getting on my nerves, because she is not a ****ing satanist.

I think Judas is more of a metaphor than anything else. She said Judas represents the darkness we all have in ourselves which we need to learn to forgive and love, for me, "Judas" is the darkness.

How far are you willing to go to succeed, I guess this article serves as the perfect answer, this is just to far, using religion to cause controversy, so her project doesn't fail, I don't know.

I think you said it best,
I also think this was a huge risk for her, following BTW with yet another controversial subject.

People.
Are.
Dumb.
Literally. They must not be intelligent enough to understand the relatively simple metaphor about falling in love with the wrong person. I mean, whenever these people criticize her, do they bring up the fact that she explicitly stated that the song is about falling in wrong with a "bad guy"? No. Rather, they state that she is freaking worshiping Satan.
I just give up. I am a Christian, and I have nothing wrong with the song as it is.

It's not even controversial in the song. Lord have mercy, she's making a freaking BIBLICAL REFERENCE.
People aren't mad at the reference. They're mad that Lady GaGa's doing it.

Simply referencing a biblical name in the song, how is that going too far?
Nope... people's thinking too much of it.

I was asleep one night & god came to me in a dream & said something that sounded like "REPENT REPENT REPENT", then I woke up with my earphones in & realised id actually fallen asleep with Judas on "REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT".
It was the holiest moment of my life tbh.

Should Britney be crucified because she sang about the end of the world?
Should Rihanna be burned at the state because she appointed herself the only person left on the planet?

NO ****!
Thats why I said it was a RISK FOR HER. The subject relating to Lady Gaga and peoples close mindedness, this is a controversial subject whether you want to see it or not. You cant honestly expect the song to be non-controversial with her saying "Jesus and Demon" in the same song. I mean its controversial. I can see why people would "cling to" this, but I dont(personally) find it direspectfull.

No matter what her intent or the true meaning of the song, the result is a song that repeats "Judas" over and over, "I'm still in love with Judas baby" several times, "Jesus is my virtue, Judas is the demon I cling to", etc.
For those who don't understand why people are upset, what would you think if Lady Gaga had titled and centred a song around "Bin Laden", "Hitler" or some other historical figure responsible for some of the most terrible events in human history? Only a metaphor, but to have their names sung aloud again and again in a pop song, while the singer declares their love for them...
