gerl, I think Toxic is more remembered than Boom Boom Pow, Just Dance, Pokerface, Need You Now, and a lot more...
btw, I just pointed out Toxic because it wasn't in the digital era chart, and it had a #9 peak on Hot 100 and it's easily one of the most remembered pop songs of the 2000s
There is a correlation between how well a song sells and how well it is remembered, but it doesn't work all of the time. Many big sellers will be forgotten
I agree with you, to an extent. "Single Ladies" was outsold by "Dynamite," but which song is or will be remembered more?
I don't think it's that strict, but in a broad sense, sales do show impact. When one song sells 5.5 million while the other sells 4.5 million, the 5.5-Milli seller is not the garaunteed more impactful song. But say, when putting Single Ladies against Rude Boy or Alejandro (both 2-2.5 million sellers), it's clear Single Ladies is the winner.
Broadly, yes, sales measure impact. But not 100% accurately for sure.
Hold It Against Me is one of the least selling #1s of all time is it not? Hot N Cold will obviously be remebered more. S&M is going to be easily forgotten as well.
Low & Right Round are still remembered. They are signature party songs.
And Toxic was not popular during the digital age, in fact, none of Britney's pre-Blackout singles were. I'm talking about from the boom of digital sales on.

Alejandro had more impact than Single Ladies (specially here).
TiK ToK has made a MAJOR impact & will be remebered for years to come. More than Just Dance & Boom Boom Pow because Ke$ha didn't have a Poker Face & I Gotta Feeling overshawdoing it.
"Dirrty" by Christina Aguilera is pretty remembered and more remembered than some of these big hits, but yet it peaked at outside of the top 40 on the Hot 100. These cases are weird.

Toxic was popular period. Regardless of the digital era or not, Toxic is still hailed as one of Britney's most successful and memorable songs of all time.

One can even say "Beautiful" also. No it didn't top the chart, but it's remembered far more easily than most of the songs in late 2002.
