The public isn't buying these artists singles based off their name, their fans are. The general public doesn't spend their life on music forums debating iTunes positions 24/7.

To make this easier...
1. Simply put, YES. The public craving for new GaGa music was palpable. (same for Britney)
2. SL the video =/= SL the song
3. By the most basic logic, i'm grouping anyone willing to immediately buy a single based on a brand new 30 sec clip as a "fan". Even still, that would attest to the size of the artists fan base, which is equally if not more important.

Basically, it's fine if people are ok with "Run the World"'s performace on Itunes, but it speaks volumes when you have to consistently portray the perceived competition in a negative light to validate those feelings of content.
