No shade to anyone, but I couldn't help but notice that all three queens of the "pop trinity" all came back this year, and they all came back with singles that were underwhelming in several ways:
Britney Spears - Hold it Against Me
Commercial Flop; went #1 in the USA but underperformed in most other territories and started free falling very soon. The song has received mostly positive reviews from critics, while the video has been criticized by some for its overt product placement and the perceived lack of enthusiasm on Britney's part.
Lady Gaga - Born This Way
Approximately 38 seconds after this hit airwaves, a gigantic shitstorm started flying towards Gaga, condemning her for a big departure from her previous sound and mostly the similarities to Express Yourself. She also received some backlash of various sorts for her lyrics. The video was mostly positively received and the song performed quite excellently all over the world, though not quite up to par with her previous lead singles.
Beyoncé - Run the World (Girls)
First of all, that title is a damn mess. More objectively speaking, this song has left many people on this site who are not Beyoncé stans rather cold and the critical response has been very mixed too. I am too lazy to quote everything but rest assured that I am not making this up, or alternatively visit this thread:
CNN on "Girls". It is too early to comment on the commercial performance
although I predict this song will not make a large impact outside the US, so I hope she has a pop single lined up if she doesnt wanna lose that momentum from IA...SF. The video looks like it could be fierce.
Keeping all these things in mind, which single do you think was the biggest disappointment, and why? Keep out any discussion about the rest of the eras, the "lack of promo" your fave received or anything else like that.
