That's not what they are saying. They are saying Britney is the last of the power pop stars in that she was everything to everyone. Her image, her songs, her performances, her star power was unmatched at a level of her peak and since then no one has really compared in the way pop stars did it in 2000's. BSB, Nsync, Britney and even to a lesser extent Christina Aguilera were all monumental during the 99/00 craze and we haven't really seen a star like that since. Even Gaga was never as every where and is not everything the way Britney and the Boybands were to kids and teens alike in the 99'/00' craze.
I don't think people actually understand how big Britney was when she first came out. She had everything from barbies made after her to video games to books to make up to lip gloss to t-shirt regalia made after her. She was a HUGE selling commodity and she was extremely accessible. She was Madonna for teens. That chick had EVERYTHING marketed after her. She had crazy endorsement deals with Pepsi, Herbal Essence, Samsung, Nabisco, McDonalds, Target, Sketchers, etc. She was literally everywhere pitching something and selling something with her face on it. You couldn't go into any store and not see her face on something. Britney was much more then just a music star to people she was a celebrity and her celebrity was unmatched and has been unmatched since and that's not debatable.
You think the stars you see now are big? They are nothing compared to what Britney was during her BOMT/OIDIA/Britney era's. It's not about her being a puppet. It's about the fact that Britney's magnitude was huge and since then we haven't seen anything rival it. Britney was a phenomenon on literally ALL fronts. That's something that you can't say about todays stars. They are very niche and cult now. They aren't as broad as they were in 99/00's where pop stars wanted to be everything to everyone. Now people want to be everything to a selected group of people. Hence why you hear the terms Navy, Monsters and Katycats. Britney was marketed towards all and she reached career highs that likely won't be repeated because the world has changed immensely since then. Thus why she is the last of the power pop stars.

I actually agree with this. Gaga isn't a pop star in the ways of old. She is more Bowie then Micheal or Madonna. She is a rock star at the heart of her and you can tell that in her performances. She doesn't compete with the likes of old school BSB, Nsync, Britney or even old school Christina.
