On the contrary, she was more popular than Kanye preceding the incident and Kanye received a larger spike in fame than Taylor.

She had several songs on her debut album chart in the top 20 despite them all being country songs without the extreme cross-over pop feel that her hits have.
"Love Story" and "You Belong With Me," her two biggest hits, were released before the VMA incident. Her albums have always been critical successes. Fearless opened with 592,000 copies (more than any Kanye West album), despite it coming out before she had any of her huge Billboard hits or the VMA incident.
Her debut album is 5x platinum in the United States. Her second album is 6x platinum in the United States. Her third, the only one that has come out proceeding the Kanye incident, is hovering at 3x platinum with something like 3.5 million sold. All three far more than Kanye has ever managed.
Try again.
