I don't think Beyonce could have been as big as she is if Aaliyah were still around. Aaliyah was one of the most critically acclaimed artists in R&B when she died, and only growing more artistically interesting and respected with each album. Beyonce came into a pretty dearth market, and just dominated (in sales, acclaim, Grammy nods). But if she'd had some legitimate, established competition from the beginning, who knows?

If an artist like Rihanna came out in the 90s she probably wouldn't have been able to give them a run for their money back then either. But times changed.

90s - emphasis on vocal ability
Now- focus on image & catchy singles

90s - lots of competition with most of them being very talented
Now - not so much
