Britney Spears gets raved for 'Femme Fatale'
by Rolling Stones. 4/4.
Quote:
The comeback of Britney Spears may finally be complete. Four years after her head-shaving, umbrella-wielding, custody-losing public breakdown, the popster has received a rave, four-star review from Rolling Stone for her seventh studio album, "Femme Fatale."
Calling Brit-Brit "pop music's stealth avant-gardist," critic Jody Rosen raves that this "may be Britney's best album."
Granted, the mag also says it's her "strangest," although "conceptually it's straightforward: a party record packed with sex and sadness."
Seven of the 12 songs are the work of chart-topping producers Max Martin and Dr. Luke, and on almost all, including the will.i.am-created "Big Fat Bass," Britney's vocals are "twisted, shredded, processed, roboticized," says the mag, which considers this aural manipulation a plus.
"Maybe this is because she doesn't have much of a voice," writes Rosen. "It's certainly because she, more than almost any other pop diva, is simply game. Femme fatale? Not so much. But say this for Britney: She's an adventuress."
Rolling Stone isn't the only outlet to give an enthusiastic thumbs-up to "Femme Fatale."
In an unofficial review ahead of the album's March 29 release, Entertainment Weekly's critic raves that it's "already rocking my world," while Idolator calls it "terrific -- easily Britney's best since 'Blackout.'"
And Pop Justice succinctly sums up of "Femme Fatale" thusly: "No crap songs."
