The earthquake was probably a warning of the volcano. Many times earthquakes precede volcanic eruptions.
Wow. This is just so sad!

Poor Japan! It definitely does not help that it is one of the most densely populated countries in the world!

That may be, but tsunamis and vocalic eruptions don't always happen because of earthquakes. The Haitian, Chilean, and New Zealand earthquakes did not cause a major tsunami or volcanic eruption. So, it's very tragic that all of this is happening in Japan.
Wow, I just realized that there's kind of a pattern of the last three earthquakes! They all create a line in the Ring of Fire, and if you follow the pattern, the western coast of the United States is next!

Chile, New Zealand, Japan. The only one that doesn't fit the pattern in Haiti. (Of course this is just a weird coincidence.)
