After Japan was struck by a 8.9-magnitude earthquake, a series of aftershocks and a consequential tsunami yesterday, the world is joining efforts to help and support the victims of these disasters.
Lady Gaga twitted yesterday afternoon that she had designed a special wristband, available for pre-order with all of the proceeds going to benefit those affected by the disaster. “I Designed a Japan Prayer Bracelet. Buy It/Donate here and ALL proceeds will go to Tsunami Relief Efforts. Go Monsters” she wrote, followed by this link to her web page with more information about the bracelet, and where you can place your order. The Bracelet (pictured bellow) is red-and-white and reads “we pray for Japan” both in English and Japanese and features an image of a hand making Gaga’s signature monster paw gesture. “Little Monsters, show your support for Japan with this ‘We Pray for Japan’ wristband! Choose your price to add an additional donation with your wristband,” the description for the bracelet reads. “All proceeds go directly to Japan relief efforts.” The base price starts at $5. The bracelets are available for pre-order and will ship on or around March 25, 2011.
Lady Gaga is only one of many artists and celebrities who have reached out to those affected by the tragic events in Japan. Early on Friday morning Madonna asked all her fans on her website to help the victims of the earthquake in Japan and the tsunami in the Pacific and to donate for Japan via the Red Cross. Earlier Britney Spears twitted “So tragic. My heart is breaking for Japan.” Justin Bieber wrote: “Japan is one of my favorite places on earth… it’s an incredible culture with amazing people. My prayers go out to them. We all need to help”. Kim Kardashian, Adam Lambert, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Alicia Keys, The Backstreet Boys, Ryan Seacrest, Glee’s Lea Michele (Rachel) and Amber Riley (Mercedes), amongst others also reached out to the people in Japan.
Designer Malan Breton, referring to his latest collection and fashion show “Kyoto Wonderland” said in a public statement: “My inspiration this season came from a beautiful, inspiring country, Japan! My prayers are with them today.” Model and party personality Jun Nakayama, who recently returned to NYC from a 4 month stay in her native Japan thanked via facebook all those concerned about the earthquake and mentioned her family was safe and fine; however she decided not to go back to Japan this week as she had planned but instead to stay in NYC for at least another week. DJ Gomi, who produced the music for Sherry Vine’s latest parody “More This Way” also thanked people for their concern and support and pointed out that facebook and twitter are helping save lives in Japan. He also wrote “From all the staff at Gomination, our thoughts and prayers are with Japan and to those who have been affected by the terrible disaster. Stay strong Nippon!!!” Gomination is Gomi’s music and entertainment label and publishing company that works with Sherry Vine, Raven O, Mila Jam, Sahara Davenport and many others.
One of the many ways in which you can help the people of Japan is by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation, as suggested by Kim Kardashian.
Also be aware that The US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) told computer users to be wary of “potential email scams, fake antivirus and phishing attacks regarding the Japan earthquake and the tsunami disasters”. “Email scams may contain links or attachments which may direct users to phishing or malware-laden websites,” US-CERT said in a statement. “Fake antivirus attacks may come in the form of pop-ups which flash security warnings and ask the user for credit card information,” it said. “Phishing emails and websites requesting donations for bogus charitable organisations commonly appear after these types of natural disasters.” Phishing refers to attempts to steal user names, passwords and other personal information from unsuspecting victims, mostly through email or instant messages.
