Discussion: Can you "pray the gay away?"

Can you "Pray the Gay Away?" Whether or not it's possible to be gay and Christian at the same time is one of the most controversial debates in Christianity today.

Investigative reporter Lisa Ling examines that premise in a special report Tuesday night on her "Our America" show broadcast on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).

One part of the investigation focuses on Exodus, the group that claims they can cure homosexuality. While another focuses on The Naming Project which teaches kids that God loves them no matter what.

Denial.

Anyone can say that they are "cured" from it if they want to. I lived a straight life for the first 17 years of my life, thinking I'll marry a woman and all. But, the true feelings are still hidden inside you and will burst out, want it or not.

The better way to demonstrate that this is complete ******** is asking a straight person to try to become gay and have feelings for same sex people. Impossible? Yeah. So same thing for the other way.

It pretty much is denial.

No one can completely pray away an attraction for the same sex, the same someone can't pray away an attraction to the opposite sex.

All these people are doing to is teaching someone to suppress those feelings which inevitably leads to a life of misery and unhappiness.

But, I really feel like those associations claiming that they can "cure" homosexuality should be banned. They want/make people think that it's something you can change or choose to be. So they use this argument next to take away rights from homosexuals in many countries. "Oh so you chose to be gay, then you deal with the consequences"

Only when it will be clear for everyone that one cannot change or choose this that they will consider treating everyone equally.

People like this make me sick. There's a House episode that delves into this. The Bible only has a clear anti-gay clear passage in Romans and even then it only mentions "men lying with other men" (referring to penetrative intercourse). The other passages are too vague. I guess if you never penetrate your partner you're technically not doing anything wrong.

I didn't read the bible but I've read quotes that state that shellfish are an abomination too. Also, you shall lapidate a woman that cheated on her husband. Why does they choose to ignore/not apply those stupid ligns, but always come back to the homosexuality one...

The do have a right to their opinion and people are going to continue to demonize homosexuality and make it a disease as long as people (like the man in the video) will easily fall into the trap.

I just don't like how their making their beliefs out to be fact. People forget religion is a BELIEF, it is not fact nor has it been proven to be fact. So trying to persuade someone on how to live their life under the guise of religion is just a waste of time.

You have the right to have an opinion, yes. But that doesn't mean you have the right to take actions toward it and influence other people.

I personally think that not all opinions are valid. If it was the case, you could allow racist opinions and actions in this line for example. Unacceptable. So the same thing apply in this issue.

It's ridiculous to think that prayer answers/resolves/changes anything, much less "cures" someone of "same sex attraction," but I'm intrigued.

It's a really tough one for me, because I'm drawn to both sides.

I wasn't raised religiously; I found it, so I guess the meanings really hit home harder in my experience.
I don't particularly believe you can 'pray the gay away', but at the same time, I am a believer that no-one is 100% straight or 100% gay. Who you are is determined by which impulses you act upon. I think who you fall in love with is a matter of person, not of gender.

Can homosexuality be cured? No - it is not a disease.

I do believe, however, that through prayer anyone can find God and find what it is they are looking for...
